Let me make an overview of the most important challenges of the Hungarian innovation system discussed so far, also including a further issue. The unhealthy regional imbalances. By „regional paradox” I mean that funny situation that the regional knowledge centers in Eastern Hungary are in fact decoupled from the strongest high tech production centers situated mostly in the western part of the country. We have to look deep into this problem and come up with effective solutions.

For the many tasks I mentioned, a significant reform process of the innovation system has started last year. As for the the institutional reforms, I would particularly stress the separation of policymaking and fund management, providing for a more efficient distribution of tasks and operation of government. From the other initiatives outlined here, I believe especially the Research and Technological Innovation Fund, and the new Act on Innovation deserve some further elaboration.
