Title Counter-piston
mechanism The problem the inventor(s) wanted to solve In machines having multiple
pistons where traditional cranks are used the perfect balancing of mass
forces can only be achieved using a lot of pistons. With the present solution
a perfect, vibration free run can be provided even in case when two or four
pistons are used and, in addition, the stroke length (travel) can also be
made easily variable during operation within one moment. Description. The counter-piston
mechanism is a hinged arm construction inserted between the pistons and the
crankshaft, the elements of which make an alternating movement together with
the pistons. Presentation. The counter-piston mechanism inserted between the
rotating crankshaft of the machine and the pistons, moving between the upper
and lower dead centres, consists of simple elements, inner shafts, arms and
hinge joints. The construction of the four pistons, two working chambers unit
can lively be understood by means of the following schematic diagram. The
diagonal arm fitted with bearings in the disk fixed to the crankshaft
transfers the alternating rotary movements to the coupling shaft through a
simple hinge joint. The drive now becomes bifurcated mirror-symmetrically
and, additional arms and shafts through their alternating, back and forth
movement, are transferring the rotary movement phases of the crankshaft to
the pistons. In the schematic diagram the timing with the diagonal arm can
also clearly be observed how the two driving sides are moving in an exact
mirror-symmetrical way. This is why the structural
elements moving in the same plane are absolutely mass balanced in every
movement phase. A two piston variant mechanism can also be constructed to
provide the same facilities and to have the same principles and, it can also
be completed with an additional mechanism not described here that makes the
easy variation possible of the piston stroke-length (travel) and the
compression ratio of the compression-expansion chamber during its operation.
The number of pistons can be increased using members moving in opposite
direction. In case of other variants a separate compression-expansion chamber
can also be formed, since, it can be located divided at the periphery and/or
in the centre space without losing any construction advantages. Application With the counter-piston
mechanism the piston containing machines can efficiently be used in any kind
of actual application. They have promising properties as high speed motors
due to their mass balanced and vibration free run. In case of working in
pumping mode the stroke length (travel) variability represents a progress
compared to the actual constructions. Advantages In addition to the
conversion of the alternating movement into rotary movement, the structural
elements having highly accurate bearing and mass balancing perform also the
distribution of the movements for each piston in a way that the spatial
location of the pistons be ideal and, this is why a higher speed, a quieter
and a more vibration free run can be achieved as those of the actual low
piston number, multiple piston constructions. In counter-piston operation
mode the piston movements are reduced to the half of the original in case of
the same compression-expansion chamber volume and speed that lowers the
tear-and-wear and the losses. Stage of development. The prototype development
is in course. Documentation available: The complete technical
documentation is not ready as yet. |
