WOMEN & WORK PRIZE FOR
FEMALE INVENTORS
There are many women who have made important contribution to society, economics and
industry through great inventions. Nevertheless there is a huge unused invention potential,
particularly with women. Thus the women & work prize for female inventors was awarded
at the iENA forum of the iENA 2017 for the first time. The winners of the female inventors’
prize of 2017 are:
Sonja Andjelkovic (Category:
Business model & organization)
Ms. Andjelkovic was awarded for her
project Afara Academic Publishing. AAP
is an innovative social entrepreneurship
initiative that is aiming at publishing em-
pirical research papers from university
graduates from Africa/MENA region on
an online platform that will be hosted in
Berlin, Germany.
Official partner is the Free University of
Berlin (FU Berlin). Interested researches
on the region, e.g. universities, interna-
tional organizations, libraries, research
networks etc. can browse the data base

of AAP and download the papers for a fee that
will directly benefit the author of the paper. The
process of identification, quality check, publica-
tion and financial handling will be organized
by a team in both Berlin and the institution in
the partner country and through crowd-voting
mechanisms, via App and peer-review system.
On one hand AAP will give graduates a chance
to receive a compensation/income for their
work as well as empower them to continue their
academic carrier. On the other hand, AAP will of-
fer researchers outside Africa/MENA a chance to
enrich their knowledge on the region through
genuine first-hand information.
Nadine Sydow (Category: Technology)
Ms. Sydow was awarded for her invention Slux-
agon which is a painting that prevents slugs
and snails from sticking to any vertical barrier.
Thus, it saves your plants & veggies from be-
ing eaten by them! Simply apply the tensidic
oil mixture with a brush on your favorite pot-
tery, your raised flower bed, a lawn edging or
whatsoever, let it dry until it is transparent and
witness the slugs to rail climbing onto these
surfaces.

& Social)
Dr. Julia Borggräfe has developed and
implemented a compensation model
for equal pay for systematically analyz-
ing factors of importance for determin-
ing gender-neutral compensation that is
equitable for the tasks to be performed.
The review of pay equality at Messe Ber-
lin analyzed the extent to which jobs
are equivalent in terms of their actual
requirements, independently of the in-
dividuals who carry them out. In the
first step, we identified jobs that are car-
ried out mostly by women or mostly by
men. This was done by first compos-
ing three comparison pairs which were
each classified at the same or roughly
the same. Equivalence was established
by using e.g. Check [English:”pay equal-
ity. Check”], which is a recognized gen-
der-neutral evaluation system that we
adapted to the specific in-house condi-
tions in the second step.
