AFRICAN TECHNOLOGY AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY DAY
This Day was
decided at the Heads of State Conference (Algiers, July 1999) of the Organization of
African Unity (OAU).
On October 27, 1999, IFIA (Africa Department)
launched a brainstorming among its members: what should and could be done for
African inventors and for the promotion of inventive activity in Africa, on this
occasion? IFIA asked its members to be creative and original.
Answers were received from the inventor
associations of Kenya, Niger and Benin, as well as from the International Energy
Foundation (Tripoli, Libya). IFIA President transmitted these ideas to the Permanent
Delegation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Geneva, on June 8, 2000.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Adopted at Lomé, Togo (December 10, 2000)
(English
translation by IFIA)
Within the framework of the 2nd Invention and
Technological Innovation Fair (SAIIT) held from December 1 to 10, 2000 at Lome, Togo,
African inventors and researchers, members of OAPI countries, recommend the following:
- Considering the enormous
potentialities that Africa is rich of intellectual
and physical resources,
- Considering the necessity of
inventive research for the development of a continent,
We, researchers and inventors, welcome :
- the creation of FAPI* by OAPI,
- the regular holding of the Fair which is the best setting for exchanges
and competition between researchers,
Ask OAPI and WIPO
- to support the efforts of African researchers and inventors through
their National Associations,
- to promote meetings between African
Inventors Associations in order
to allow them to coordonate their activities and to strengthen their
working relations with IFIA.
Considering the crucial role played by African Inventors
Associations within the Organization and the framing of the inventors, we recommend OAPI
and WIPO to support effectively the associations which are active and help those who have
difficulties in obtaining equipments and in undertaking their activities.
