IFIA’s Enduring Commitment to IP in Music: A Legacy Since 1991
IFIA’s dedication to intellectual property (IP) protection in the music industry has deep roots,
dating back to 1991 when it actively championed the rights of innovators such as Roberto del
Rosario of the Philippines. A visionary inventor and accomplished musician, del Rosario made
history with his groundbreaking creations, most notably the Sing-Along System a pioneering
innovation that laid the foundation for modern karaoke technology. His contributions extended
beyond this invention, with advancements like the Echo Sound Processor, which transformed
stereo components into high-quality sing-along systems, and Voice Color Tapes, scientifically
programmed to match different vocal ranges. These innovations not only reshaped the music
and entertainment industries but also highlighted the critical role of intellectual property in
          fostering creativity and technological progress.
Recognizing the significance of such contributions, IFIA took proactive steps in supporting
music-related intellectual property rights by advocating for stronger legislative protections.
Through its collaboration with the Filipino Inventors’ Society (FIS), IFIA played a key role in
lobbying for the introduction of laws that safeguarded the rights of inventors, ensuring that
their creations received the legal and commercial recognition they deserved. By leveraging its
extensive global network, IFIA facilitated the international visibility of such inventions, helping
innovators navigate the complexities of intellectual property protection and commercialization.
This early commitment to music and intellectual property rights set a strong precedent for
IFIA’s ongoing mission. Today, IFIA continues to be at the forefront of innovation in the creative
industries, empowering inventors, musicians, and entrepreneurs who develop new technologies
that shape the future of music. Whether through advancements in AI-generated compositions,
digital music distribution, or sound engineering technologies, IFIA remains steadfast in its
mission to protect and promote intellectual property in the music sector ensuring that creative
minds receive the recognition, protection, and opportunities they need to thrive.
